Paul qualified in dentistry from the University of Liverpool in 1989 before working in hospital and university positions in the speciality of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, in 1993.

Other experience includes working as a clinical lecturer at the University of Liverpool, Department of Clinical Dental Sciences, during this time he had a number of research projects published in dental journals. He also enjoyed a period working in general dental practice to broaden his experience.

Paul completed his specialist orthodontic training and Masters Degree in 1997 before setting up in specialist orthodontic practice. During his orthodontic training he won the Orthologic prize for the quality of his treatments presented at examination. In addition to working in orthodontic practice, Paul is a clinical tutor at Liverpool University, involved in the orthodontic training of post graduate students, as well as acting as orthodontic advisor to the Local Dental Committee and Primary Care Trust.

Paul is a member of the British Lingual Orthodontic Society and has presented research at the British Society of Dental Research.

Paul lives on the Wirral with his wife and four children.
